I collected all the student's writing journals and will have them back to them next week. No assigned homework except for the typical 20 minutes a day reading and work on their Big Question!

November 20th
Hands on Hanford has a HUGE project to complete this weekend. A 70 point assignment that has them comparing and contrasting two Civil Rights movements! They began this assignment with a partner in class but should have it completed by Monday.
On Monday they will have a quiz over the following individuals; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Malcolm X, Cesar Chavez, Corky Gonzalez, Dennis Banks, Clyde Bellecourt and Betty Friedan.
Their Book Projects are due on Monday and I will also hand back their writing journals.
Middle School Language Arts finished up the 2nd Edition of the Three Rivers Times and hopefully if I can get it printed out they will all have copies on Monday!
Middle School History continued to look at Washington State Industries.
No homework was assigned to the Middle Schoolers!!

Week of November 17th
This week the Hands on Hanford class will be concluding their Civil Rights unit with a wrap up of Women's Rights, Hispanic Rights as well as the American Indians. Their homework is to select one of these groups and tell me their importance. They also are looking at both the "I have a dream" speech of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and Nelson Mandela's "Glory and Hope" speech. They need to answer the following questions about the two speeches: Define: five score; Emancipation Proclamation; promissory note; gradualism; legitimate; inextricably; degenerate; militancy; devotees; mobility; redemptive; discord; exalted; hew; prodigious; amnesty; reconciliation; deprivation; covenant; interim
Read pages 440-447 (Or look up the two speeches online)
Answer the following questions:
1. In your opinion, which is the better speech- “I have a Dream” or “Glory and Hope”?
2. What are the similarities and differences in the two speeches?
3. Do you think King’s dream has come true? Why or why not?
4. Think about a social or political issue that is important to you. Write some notes about what you would say in your own “I have a dream” speech on this topic. Jot down examples that might persuade others to share your opinion.
5. What examples of racial injustice does King describe?
6. What gives Mandela hope for the future of South Africa?
7. What solutions does King come up with in his speech?
For Middle School Language Arts we looked at advertising and how we could implement ads into our newspaper...students need to select ONE local business and make an ad that we can add to our next edition of the paper. Include description, illustration as well as contact information.
They also need to finalize their articles as they are due on Thursday AND their November book reports are due no later than Monday the 24th!!
Middle School History examined the Apple Industry in Washington State and even was surprised by Olivia's gift of Applets and Cotlets and pictures of the Davies Bros Orchard! Tuesday's Homework is being guided by a handout on the Washington Apples and students are responsible for answering the following questions:
1. How has the Apple Industry changed?
2. Design an Apple box for your family's orchard (see the following webpage for help: http://www.nationalapplemuseum.com/book23.html )
3. What does "organic" mean when applied to apples?
4. What purpose does the Apple Commission have?
5. Write your favorite apple recipe *be sure to specify what kind of apple you'd use!!
Wednesday's Homework is to discuss with your parent what Washington grown food items you have in your cupboard/fridge and to list them!!
PE had a great time playing basketball and the cooking class for the High Schoolers are awaiting Mitchell and Tony's throwndown of Orange Chicken!! All other HS students should bring 3 chocolate candy bars. Middle Schoolers will be in the classroom!

November 13th Updates!!
Hands On Hanford had an EXCELLENT conversation about not only the history of the Civil Rights movement but what it means to us here in the Tri-Cities today. Their homework is to research 1. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr; 2. JFK and Bobby Kennedy and 3. Thurgood Marshall. Each student should have what each of these individuals did to promote Civil Rights in America.
Quiz on Monday: 13th, 14th, 15th Amendment, Brown v Board of Education, Plessy v Ferguson, Jim Crow Laws and the Civil Rights act of 1964
Middle School Language Arts: Were able to interview the High Schoolers for the newspaper. Next weeks spelling words are: jealousy, amateur, achievement, argument, chocolate, restaurant, receipt, irrelevant, scissors and village.
Middle School History: Discussed the major industries in Washington and did a map exercise with them.

Homework for Hands on Hanford: The class is continuing their studies of the Civil Rights Movement and each student has a worksheet to complete on what both the Constitution and the Bill of Rights have to say about Civil Rights. **Reminder their Book Reports will be due on the 24th!!
Middle School Language Arts: Has a worksheet on the vocabulary surrounding Veteran's Day. They also should be working on their rough draft of their newspaper article for November!
Middle School History: Each student selected an industry in Washington and are supposed to study its impact not only on Washington State but also internationally.
For Thursday: Middle Schoolers in cooking need to bring a minimum of 2 items to add to an egg dish AND thanks to Conner and Katie for volunteering to bring a dozen eggs!

Write a brief report comparing the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption with an eruption at the volcano you chose. (1 paragraph)
