Out on Monday, Feb 22nd

I am so sorry to say that I will not be at school on Monday. I am having some medical tests done and will be leaving Mrs. King in charge! Here is what I have left for her and you to do:
Leadership: clean up after Valentine's Day and make springish posters!!

HSLA: You will be looking at an in class reading of "Why Terroroists do the things they do" This will be tied to your week's homework. It is different than what is on the calendar so please make a note of it!
You will also be writing 10 questions and answers that show a true understanding of your novel...Remember novel tests on Thursday!!

MSLA: You will be turning in your permission slips for Beauty and the Beast field trip on Thursday!!
Also you will be looking at the historic aspect fo the story and selecting a fairy tale to modernize!

Psychology: Yep; even though I am not there your test will be!! Please no notes or handouts just your brains!! You will do great! Just do your best! If there is time you will also watch a short video.
For homework you will BEGIN to do a psychology outline on a problem we have here in America...the example is TV and Violence; what is the connection? You can choose whatever topic you are most interested in. Homework is to select a topic, begin your outline and find 3 sources that are either pro or con on the topic! You can find ideas at http://www.all-science-fair-projects.com/ just search "psychology" and you will be able to find quite a few ideas. Another great site is: http://www.juliantrubin.com/fairprojects/psychology/memory.html

US History: Using your notes Mrs. King is going to help you brainstorm the causes of the Progressive Movement.
You will also have an inclass reading from Chapter 9 of Upton Sinclair's book The Jungle
Homework will be to select an invention and tell me it's development, developer and it's importance. You can find a list of these items at: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/inventors/1800b.shtml

Hope the day goes great and if you have any questions I will be at school (hopefully) on Tuesday from 8-2pm!

High School 2/18

High School Language Arts looked at Howard Zinn and his belief in rewriting history to show both sides of the story...students started with their opinion and then looked at the article to try and support their beliefs. It was great to see students look at documents to find their evidence. Hopefully this document encouraged open-thinking even if they didn't agree with Zinn.
Students also were reminded that they have their novel test for their books on Thursday, the 25th.
I did give the students a few minutes to catch up on their reading but students should be doing focused reading time in order to finish their books on time.

Psychology looked at the various careers that are involved in the topics we are going to be covering. Numerous students did not have it done so I reminded them to have it done on Monday. WINGS has been updated so you can check to see if your student has this assignment completed.
Students were reminded that they have a TEST on Monday over Chapter One.
I gave them an in-class pretest to give them an idea of what the test will look like! Students should do their online self-check quiz as well as make sure they are able to complete the Chapter Assessment in their textbook. They will turn in the online test to me on Monday!

Middle School 2/18

What a GREAT day! We covered not only who is reading what but had a fun BINGO game too! Students were reminded that they will have a novel test on the book they are reading for February on March 1st (due to field trip of Beauty and the Beast).

For history class there was an addition to their calendar as they are to read pages 612-619 in their history book and take notes for Monday. We will be starting the Progressive Unit!! Other than that we talked about the daily life of a President and watched a learn360 video clip on Teddy Roosevelt!!

Middle School Activities Recap 2/11/2010

Feb 11th Middle School Language Arts

Today’s entry task: “What is the funniest (strangest, scariest…etc) thing that happened to you when you were growing up?”
**Keep these (you will be doing one each day you are in class and turn in on 2/22

(Monday’s was “Choose a situation in your book and tell me why it is unbelievable.” Describe in detail using pages from your book to support your answer.)
We then worked on our autobiographies…students took notes on the specifics that need to be in each of their chapters. I had the students change their assignment for 2/17 to “Work on Autobiography”. I will be emailing out the specifics, rubric and due dates as they unfold.

Middle School US History
Class started late due to School Assembly. We broke into groups and looked at our country’s freedom (speech, religion, search and seizure, etc.) and looked at the positive as well as the potential negatives of these freedoms.
They also completed “Why I am proud to be an American…” based on their homework on the different types of governments.

Presidential Speeches assignment for the week of Feb. 15th

Many students have been asking so here it is:

President J. F. Kennedy: http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/jfkinaugural.htm

President FDR: http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/fdrpearlharbor.htm

President Reagan: http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/ronaldreaganbrandenburggate.htm

HS LA: Listen to the three speeches and pull out quotes and specifics that allow you to see the total picture of not only the event but the speaker as well. Write a short summary on how each was able to communicate effectively as well as an opinon on why you think each of these speeches is remembered by the generation that first heard them!

MS History: Select 2 of the 3 speeches and listen to them. What does the President say in each of the speeches that allow you to know more about that time period? Why do you think the people would remember this particular speech from the President during this time period? Please consult with a parent or an adult to add in a personal connection to each of the speeches you have listened to.

Welcome to Second Semester!!

This semester I am going to try to do something different...I have given the students a calendar of events for the whole month. This hopefully will clear up any homework questions although I will still be using this blog to help clarify any homework directions.

Also in Wings you should notice that ALL assignments are in for the month designated by the date it was assigned on the calendar. As assignments come in I will be putting those grades in. So if a student turns in something that is not due for weeks you will see it in their grades rather than the student holding on to them for weeks.

Please let me know how this goes!

Middle School US History:
Students were given books on Monday...PLEASE keep these books at home! They are not only heavy but they should be used as a reference for their homework assignments!

I asked the students to select ANY 20 year time span in their textbook and highlight major Political and Social events that occurred. Political events on the top of their timeline and social events on the bottom. From this timeline they should then select ONE event that they feel they know a lot about and they should describe in detail this event!

Middle School Language Arts:
This class is now an hour and 30 minutes but it will be filled with activities and we will be switching from one topic to another quite quickly so the students should NOT be bored!!

Students should have gone to the library and select a book to read...The students should bring their reading book to class everyday!!

For the first month we are really going to focus on 6 Trait writing...here is a GREAT website for you to go over with your student in case there are any questions: http://www.aea11.k12.ia.us/curriculum/6_traits/information.html

High School Language Arts:

This class is now an hour and 30 minutes but it will be filled with activities and we will be switching from one topic to another quite quickly so the students should NOT be bored!!

We are going to be looking at a variety of writing thise semester and we are going to be balancing that with solid literature selections that the students will select. I have given the students a list of SUGGESTED reading titles but since the class contains 9th through 12th graders PLEASE go through this list with your student to make sure they are making appropriate decisions about their reading.

The students should bring their reading book to class everyday!!

High School Psychology
This class will be a fascinating look into not only the study of psychology but will give the students a chance to meet real life psychologists and ask them questions. We will be utilizing a variety of sources to look into the history of psychology, the founding fathers of psychologists as well as a number of activities that they will be doing at home to have a complete introduction to Psychology!!

The students in this class DO need to bring their book to class everyday!
