December 15th
Well, I can't believe it but it is time for Christmas Break!! Although there is going to be some homework involved for the break it should not be too daunting!

For Hands on Hanford the students REALLY do need to start working on their BQ's. They need 1. A timeline from 1920 until today. Showing national, international and Hanford dates.
2. Their paper, 10-15 pages, 12 point Times New Roman font and double spaced. This should include their graphs, illustrations, maps, etc.
3. A Bibliography or Work Cited page.

**Their Essay #2 is due on January 5th and their December Book projects were due today so if they were absent they need to hand these in on the 5th as well!!

For Middle School Language Arts: Students should be thinking about their January newspaper articles.
Book projects were also due today for the Middle Schoolers!!

For Middle School History: Finished Classroom Based Assessment papers are due immediately!

Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

December 11th

Today during Hands on Hanford we went over their articles and they were able to 1. rewrite ONE of their articles in their own words and summarize the importance of knowing this information when comparing the 70's to today. Students are beginning to realize that many patterns in history are just that...patterns and repeat themselves.
We also organized their binders so that they now know what is in them!

We also began looking at President Ronald Reagan and the students used textbooks to analyze what the Foreign policy and the economic policies were for both Carter and Reagan. They will use these notes on Monday.

I encouraged all the students to be working on their BQ's over the weekend so as we discuss their requirements they won't be so shocked! Their final BQ's will be anywhere between 10-15 pages long so they really should have something written now!

Book projects are due on Monday!!

Middle School Language Arts edited their December Newspaper!! Look for it on Monday! They also shared their Mad Lib stories....they all did a fantastic job!

Middle School History class continued to work on the CBA (Classroom Based Assessment) with myself and Mrs. Davies helping them edit their papers. Their final drafts are due on Monday and should be typed up and double spaced!

Cooking class prepared their recipe books, cleaned out the kitchen cupboards and even made Oatmeal Cookies...we had an extremely busy day but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves!

Week of December 8th

Today during Hands on Hanford we went over a literature sample of the bombing of Pearl Harbor to commemorate the anniversary on December 7th. We also spent some time to organize their notebooks so hopefully they will be able to find their work!!
The students also watched a video on Jimmy Carter http://www.learn360.com/ShowVideo.aspx?SearchText=jimmy+carter&ID=17861
For homework they are to find 3 articles from the newspaper on: 1. The Israeli and Palestinian conflict 2. The economy/consumption and 3. Islamic terrorists.
We will tie these into the events of the 1970's on Thursday.

Reminder: Book Projects are due on Monday!!

In Middle School Language Arts they took their pre-test on all 20 words and then we did a mad gab story in which the students are to take their stories and type them up and make an illustrated story book.

Reminder: Book Projects are due on Monday!!

Middle School History Class continued to work on their Classroom Based Assignments...their rough drafts are due on Thursday!

PE class did a fantastic job at bowling today!

See you all on Thursday!

December 4

Hands on Hanford has had a GREAT conversation about President Richard Nixon and the political/social climate of the 70's. For homework they need to connect what they learned about the 70's with what is going on today. For example: war, economy, social unrest, etc. ONE paragraph is what is expected on Monday.

Also their final draft of Essay #1 is due on Monday as well. It should be typed up and at least 5 paragraphs long.

Middle School Language Arts: Had the opportunity to interview high school students for their articles, selected articles as well as peer edited their articles. Look for the newspaper on December 15th!! Final drafts of their articles are due on Monday!

Middle School History: Finalized their "Classroom Based Assessment" assignment by looking up another perspective. All students should have their 3 perspectives done by Monday and we will begin to write their rough drafts then.

Cooking class was a BLAST! They are working on a little surprise as well as had a Cupcake Challenge where they transformed 24 cupcakes into a Winter Scene. The high school beat out the Middle Schoolers but not by much!!

Have a great weekend everyone and we will see you on Monday!!

Homework: December 1

Hands on Hanford has begun to look at how to evaluate a timeline and break down the information into different categories. For homework students need to do the following
1. Finish their timelines from 1971-1974
2. Write a rough draft on one of the following topics...they did their outline in class today:

Each essay must be a minimum of 5 paragraphs and must be written in the proper style…persuasive or expository.

1. Think of an adult from your current school or another school you have attended that you will remember for a long time. In a multi-paragraph essay, explain to your teacher what will make this person hard to forget and why.
2. Over the years, humans have benefited from inventions (as simple as a zipper or as complex as a computer or space ship). Write an essay for your teacher in which you name an invention that has had an important impact on how people live, work or play. Inform your teacher of the importance of this invention.
3. Recently a citizen’s group proposed a change to the rules for obtaining a driver’s license. The group has proposed that high school students have at least a "B" average in order to get a driver’s license. Take a position on this proposal. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper to persuade voters to agree with your position.
4. Think about the area or community in which you live. Write several paragraphs explaining to your teacher what you like or dislike about your area or community and why.
5. You have been given permission to invite a person to speak to sophomores at your school. Write a multi-paragraph letter in which you name the person and convince your principal that this person would be the best speaker.

Middle School Language Arts:
Students are to define each of their spelling words and write a sentence for each of them...here are their words: debt deceive decorations definite definition delicate demonstrate dependent description detect detour develop dictionarydifference disaster discourage discovery disease document domestic
Also students selected their December article to write...rough drafts are due on Thursday, final drafts will be due on the 8th!

Middle School History:
Students have started on their Classroom Based Assessment. Looking at Constitutional Issues.
Look over the student's packet for more information! Here is the website where you can get more information: http://www.k12.wa.us/assessment/WASL/SocialStudies/MiddleSchool.aspx
Then just click on the CIVICS *Constitutional Issues buttons for more information.
Students will need to have a minimum of ONE perspective for Thursday. We will do another perspective in class then they will do the third one on their own.
